Transition Year Programme

The Olympic Handball Transition Year (TY) Programme is designed to not only introduce the essential skills, rules and strategies of the fast-paced game of Olympic Handball, but to help students develop valuable coaching and leadership skills. Students will not only learn to play the sport, but will also gain the confidence to teach and lead others, fostering a sense of community and teamwork within your school.

Programme Options

We offer two flexible programme delivery options:

6-Week Programme (available to schools in Dublin, Meath & Kildare)

    • Duration: 6 weeks, 1 session per week
    • Focus: In-depth introduction to the sport, rules, coaching, leadership, and refereeing
    • Content: Weekly sessions build progressively on skills and knowledge
    • Outcome: Students will be prepared to plan and deliver Olympic Handball sessions to younger peers within the school or at a local primary school.

6-Hour Intensive Programme (available to schools outside Dublin, Meath & Kildare)

      • Duration: 6 hours, completed in one day
      • Focus: Comprehensive introduction to the sport in a condensed format
      • Content: Intensive training on the basics of the game, coaching techniques, and leadership skills
      • Outcome: Students will be equipped to lead and deliver Olympic Handball sessions to younger students either within the school or at a local primary school.

    What Students Will Learn

    • Introduction to Olympic Handball:
      Understanding the origins, rules, and basic strategies of the game.
    • Playing the Game:
      Hands-on experience in playing Olympic Handball, focusing on teamwork, communication, and skill development.
    • Coaching & Leadership:
      Building the foundation to coach and lead, with practical tips on session planning, communication, and motivation.
    • Refereeing:
      Learn the rules and regulations of the game from a referee’s perspective, including managing the game and ensuring fair play.

    Beyond the Programme

    After completing the TY Programme, students are encouraged to take the lead within their school or community by:

    • Delivering Handball Sessions:
      Organising and running handball sessions for younger students within the school.
    • Engaging with Local Primary Schools:
      Bringing their knowledge and enthusiasm to nearby primary schools by delivering fun and educational handball sessions.

    These activities not only reinforce the skills learned but also provide valuable leadership experience, contributing to students' overall personal development.
